El Día del Libro se conmemora el 15 de junio de 1908 debido a la entrega de premios de un concurso literario organizado por el entonces Consejo Nacional de Mujeres. La biblioteca del organismo tomó la iniciativa para que se celebrara instalando esa fecha como festejo anual.
Por Decreto Nacional Nº 1038, del gobierno de Marcelo T. de Alvear, se declaró oficialmente el 15 de junio como la “Fiesta del Libro”. Luego, en 1941 por una una resolución del Ministerio de Educación se cambió la denominación por “Día del Libro”, la cual se mantiene hasta hoy, conservando los mismos objetivos iniciales: fomentar la lectura,valorar la cultura, combatir el analfabetismo, rendir homenaje universal a los libros y autores en todo el país.
A nivel mundial se celebra el «Día Mundial del Libro y del Derecho de Autor» el 23 de abril, en conmemoración a la muerte de Miguel de Cervantes, William Shakespeare y el Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, los tres en el año 1616, fue delimitado por la UNESCO celebrada en París en 1995.
